This was a mini lesson about shading. We learned things like figuring out where a light source is coming from, using that to make the shape look 3D, shading with the shape, shading techniques, stippling, etc.. Our assignment was to draw three shading scales in pen, charcoal and pencil and then draw three different shapes in each media. I, being a perfectionist, didn't finish all of them besides the pen one.
The left picture is the sphere I drew in charcoal. To be completely honest, I think this is the best charcoal sphere I have ever drawn. It's also the best shape out of all the five. I didn't really have any trouble with this besides the shadow. I'm not very good at making shadows for stuff but I thought this one came out pretty good. Below is the shading scale, which I could have done a better job on. I was rushing so that's why its kind of messy. |
The picture on the left is the rest of the assignment. The first two pen drawings (the cone and the sphere) where done with a 0.35 Micron pen so that's why they're light. The square was done with a Sharpie pen. I also think I could have done a better job on all of these, but, again, I was in a rush because we were starting another project in class. The pen drawing is the only one that is finished with all 4 parts of the assignment. The drawing below the pen is my pencil shading scale and sphere. I have never really been good at pencil so--me being me--I don't like what I drew. I don't like either the sphere or the scale and I know I could have done better. |
I think I gained skill in charcoal with this exercise. It was the only one I kind of spent time on. I really like working with charcoal any way because....say you colored a certain part darker than necessary....you can just use a kneaded eraser and almost all of it comes up! It's awesome. I think it's kind of like an undo button on a computer.
